Woman wants divorce due to husband’s laziness

Monsurat Bilaminu has complained bitterly at the Agege customary court over her husband’s laziness urging the court to dissolve their marriage.
According to the 45-year old woman, her husband has refused to take up a job appointment or do business to earn a living and cater for the family.
She said she has been the one catering for the family for the past 24 years of their marriage.

She said her husband has refused to seek employment, and does not want to take up his responsibilities by catering for her and their six children. “I have been responsible for the children’s upkeep and my husband has stopped supporting me for a long time now. When l married him, I thought he was a gentleman, but he is not. He does not perform his fatherly duties,” she said.
Mrs Bilaminu also said that because of the financial hardship, she had to distribute the six children to different families because the responsibility became too much for her.
She then pleaded that the court dissolves the marriage so that she can have peace and start her life all over again.
The husband, 55-year old Abubakar Bilaminu, also told the court that he cannot continue with the marriage any more.
He said that the wife has become too stubborn for him to handle. “She disrespects me and does whatever she likes without consulting me. She said that I am lazy but she has forgotten when I made a container for her to do her fashion design job and make a living. She started it and stopped and decided to do a business without letting me know.
“She takes laws into her hands. I made a container for her to sew clothes, but later realized that she had started selling herbal drugs. She travels as far as Ghana and Togo to market her products and leaves home for weeks without telling me and leaves the children unattended to. She lied that I have not been taking care of my children just because she wants to end the marriage,” he said.
Mr Bilaminu said that he is also tired of the marriage and wants a divorce. He asked the court to grant his wife the divorce but grant him custody of the children.
He said, “I want the custody of my children and the court to fix a day their mother can see them. We can arrange a meeting place because I do not want her to come to my house again”.
The President of the Court, Mr P.A. Williams, consequently dissolve the union and asked the couple to live in peace.
