Nigeria's democracy is under attack, says Ikpeazu

Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State has said that Nigeria’s democracy is under serious attack, warning on the grave im­plications if the various democratic institutions fail to rise in its defence.
Ikpeazu made the observation yesterday in Umuahia when he received in audience a Senate del-egation who came to commiserate with him and the people of the state on the demise of the im-mediate past Nigerian High Commis­sioner to Canada, Chief Ojo Maduekwe; and the late Sena-tor Onyeka Okorafor.

The governor, who was speaking on the back­drop of the botched at­tempt by Dr. Uche Ogah to unseat him following the judgment of Justice Okon Abang of the Abu­ja High Court which or-dered him to vacate of­fice, described the court ruling as a danger signal to Nigeria’s democracy.
He said that “what Abia is going through today is on behalf of Nigeria as what is being attacked is the very foundation of Nigeria’s democracy.”
Ikpeazu further pos­ited : “If a High Court can give an order to re­move a sitting Governor, that High Court can also remove a President and it tells a story about the political stability of Ni­geria.
“It will impact on how people, investors and the rest of the world perceive us. Nobody wants a country that is atomistic,in turmoil and unstable.” he said.
