PDP crisis: Court strikes out Sheriff’s application

A Federal Capital Territo­ry High Court sitting at Apo, Abuja, yesterday struck out the application filed by the factional National Chair­man of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ali Modu Sheriff that prayed it to set aside the court judgment that nullified the process that produced him as national chairman.
In his judgment delivered yesterday, Justice Valentine Ashi of the FCT High Court struck out the motion for lack of merit and abuse of court process.

It would be recalled that Jus­tice Ashi had on Tuesday, June 28, 2016 delivered a verdict that nullified the Amendment of Ar­ticle 47 (6) of the Constitution of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) 2014 which Senator Sher­iff claimed to have taken effect at the Special National Conven­tion in December of the same year that produced Ali Modu Sheriff’s predecessor, Alh. Am­adu Adamu Muazu, thereby nul­lifying the appointment of Sen­ator Sheriff by the 68th National Executive Committee meeting of the PDP.
While delivering the judg­ment, Justice Ashi urged poli­ticians to learn to accept defeat and not to attempt to use the court to achieve goals they failed to score in the political field.
Responding to the court’s decision yesterday, the Chief spokesperson of the party, Prince Dayo Adeyeye said, “The party welcomed the develop­ment and restated the call by the PDP to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), to immediately ef­fect the arrest and prosecution of the former national chairman, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, Hon. Matthew Iduoriyekemwen and their co-travelers for Contempt of Court”.
The party further called on its members nationwide to re­main steadfast and continue to support the PDP National Care­taker Committee led by Senator Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi, CON who has been confirmed by the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt on July 4, 2016 as the only authentic and legal Working Committee of the party.
