Senators threaten to impeach Buhari over Alleged Constitutional Breaches

Aggrieved Senators on Tuesday threatened to initiate impeachment processes against President Muhammadu Buhari over al­leged constitutional breaches.
The plot against the Presi­dent was discussed by the Sen­ate at its closed-door meeting when the Upper House re­sumed from its Sallah break.
Sources at the meeting claimed that the move to im­peach the President was initiat­ed by a Senator from Kogi State.
A first timer Senator on the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC) who spoke with The AUTHORITY on the matter on condition anonymity, said that when Senator Oluremi Tinubu (APC) could not hold back her feelings on the issue, she was shouted down.

In fact, she was said to have been assaulted.
Tempers reportedly rose when the matter came up at the closed-door session of the Senate.
An APC Senator from one of the northern states con­firmed that the session was dominated by issues of Exec­utive recklessness and its out­right disregard for the Nation­al Assembly.
The Senators were said to be emphatic that President Buha­ri had serially breached some provisions of the Constitution, thereby leaving the situation as if the Senate lacked the teeth to bite.
It was further learnt that the Attorney-General for the Fed­eration (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami was also at the centre stage of the discussion, with almost Sena­tors of the People’s Democrat­ic Party and those of APC sym­pathetic to the Senate President Bukola Saraki, complaining that the AGF was undermin­ing Nigeria’s democracy by ut­terly disregarding the Senate in­vitation.
Meanwhile, the PDP Sen­ators have vowed to consult with party leaders to actualise the impeachment plan.
Another source at the meet­ing claimed that the situation was brought under control by former Senate President David Mark who prevailed on pro-Sa­raki senators not to go ahead with the plot.
Mark was also alleged to have stopped the Like Minds Senators (pro-Saraki group) from suspending their col­leagues, who came up with the forgery allegation against Sara­ki and the Deputy Senate Presi­dent, Ike Ekweremadu.
A senator who was at the session, said that trouble start­ed when some senators loy­al to Saraki approached their colleagues, who dragged their presiding officers to court, led by Senators Suleiman Othman Hunkuyi (APC Kaduna North) and Kabir Marafa (APC Zam­fara Central) to withdraw the petition so that their grievanc­es could be resolved internally.
The lawmaker said that when they refused to heed this plea, it forced Senator Dino Melaye to call for the suspen­sion of all the Senators who wrote the petition.
Melaye (APC, Kogi West) was also quoted to have urged his colleagues that the Attor­ney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, must be brought before the Senate for interrogation for charging the Senate leadership with forgery in court.
According to the lawmak­er, it was at that point that Sen­ator Tinubu (APC, Lagos Cen­tral), said the Senate should not be reduced to a kindergar­ten where members could just issue childish threats, calling on Senators to close ranks and seek reconciliation amongst its members.
When she made this state­ment, according to the source, Melaye got offended and start­ed calling her names, and say­ing, “I will beat you up on this floor and nothing will happen.”
It was learnt that the prompt intervention of David Mark, who was moving from one seat of senators to another, stopped the planned impeach­ment plot being hatched on the floor of the upper chamber against Buhari at the closed-door session.
