FRESH ATTACKS: Two militants, one soldier killed in Bakassi

A soldier and two militants have died in an attack on troops at the Efut Esighi Waterfront of Bakassi Local Government Area of Cross River State.

The Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman, said in a statement on Saturday that the militants stormed the troops’ location in several speed boats.

He said the militants were led by a wanted kingpin, Benjamin Simplee, the leader of the Bakassi Strike Force, also known as G1.

Usman said two soldiers were still missing, adding that several of the militants escaped with gunshot wounds.

He stated that the militants burnt a van belonging to the Army. He added that the Army had reinforced its presence in the area, noting that elements of the Nigerian Air Force were in pursuit of the fleeing militants.

But according to one of the village heads in a neighbouring community, who craved anonymity, the militants came in from the creeks close to the town of Esighi and engaged the soldiers in a gun battle before retreating.

The source said, “The militants went to invade the home of their leader which has been taken over by the military. We heard gunshots for more than three hours and at the end of it, I can confirm that five soldiers were killed while another one died later in the morning. The attack started around 1am and lasted for over two hours.”

Usman’s statement partly read, “Today, in the early hours of the morning, suspected militants, led by wanted criminal kingpin, Benjamin Simplee, leader of the Bakassi Strike Force, in several speed boats attacked troops deployed in Efut Esighi Waterfront, Bakassi LGA of Cross River State.

“During the attack, a soldier was killed in action, while two soldiers were missing. They also burnt a pickup vehicle. The troops also killed two of the attackers while the rest escaped with gunshot wounds.

“However, the reinforcement team has found the missing soldiers. In addition, the troops’ location has been reinforced with more gunboats and air components. The clearance and pursuit operation are ongoing.”

He said that the army would not be deterred by the nefarious acts of the militants. Usman noted that those behind the dastardly act would be arrested and brought to justice. He warned criminals planning to attack military locations to have a change of mind.
