Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo has backed the ongoing clamp down on suspected corrupt judges across the county by operatives of the Directorate of State Services (DSS).
Osinbajo, a professor of law, gave the endorsement at the opening ceremony of the 46th yearly Conference of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) in Abuja on Tuesday. The theme of the Conference: "Accountability Now: Nigeria"
He said the courts remain public resource, hence the need for Judges to be held to account for their actions.
Osinbajo noted that public officials are not adequately held to account in Nigeria hence the low performance in government.
He charged the ICAN members who most often are charged with public finances to raise their accountability a lot more to ensure increased performance.
"Part of the reasons why things are not working well in Nigeria as they ought to be is the inability to hold officials accountable for their tasks. Holding a public official to account for their responsibility going forward is going to be a key way to increase performance “he noted.
"Those who handle public or private resources must account for their performance because lack of performance can hold down a country. Courts are a public resource, therefore judges and Lawyers like every other public or private official must be held accountable for their responsibilities. We must be able to hold ourselves accountable for the responsibilities that we are charged with” he said.
According to him, “a situation where banks books certified by Accountants sometimes turn out to mean something else leaves much to be desired by the Accounting professionals. I think we need to hold ourselves accountable a bit more" the Vice President further pleaded.
Deacon Titus Soetan, the 52nd President of ICAN said the theme which is in alignment with the International Federation of Accountants’ (IFAC) global campaign, could not have been more apt given the exposition of various financial improprieties of alarming magnitude especially in the public sector of the economy.
