Human Rights Watch Demands Apology From Buhari Over Kitchen Comment

The international human rights community has asked President Muham­madu Buhari to apologise over his comment that his wife, Ai­sha, belongs in the kitchen.
Buhari had on Saturday in Germany said that Aisha “be­longs in the kitchen, the living room, and the ‘other room’.”
Buhari’s comments have been described as sexist and anti-women.
The first to react, albe­it, non-verbally, was German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, who was standing beside Buha­ri when he made the comment.
Merkel had simply glared at Buhari and chuckled.

But Sophie Garrat, Foreign News Editor, Sky News said that “If you’re bored of Trump, here’s a current world leader who says his wife’s place is in the kitchen #sexism#nigeria.”
To Kennerh Roth, Execu­tive Director, Human Rights Watch, President Buhari owes women an apology for re­sponding to his wife’s criticism by relegating her to the kitchen.
Television personality and Nigeria’s Funmi Iyanda said that Buhari’s comment “don’t embarrass me, presidents come and go. A Nigeria where his comment represents norm, shames me and that needs to go.”
The Director of Africa Di­vision of Human Rights Watch, Daniel Bekele: “As the issue of sexual harassment takes cen­tre stage in the US presidential election, many Africans were deeply shocked over sexist and offensive remarks by one of Af­rica’s few democratically elect­ed presidents.”
Rather unusually for a pol­itician’s spouse, Nigeria’s first lady, Aisha Buhari, publicly criticised her husband, Presi­dent Buhari, and warned that she will not campaign along­side him for re-election again unless he reforms his leader­ship.
President Buhari, who was on an official visit to Germany, shocked multitudes in Nigeria and beyond when he publicly shot back, saying, “I don’t know which party my wife belongs to. But she belongs to my kitchen, my living room and the other room.”
