The Primate of Anglican Church of Nigeria, Most Rev Nicholas Okoh, has called on the Kano State Government to explain to Nigerians the recent release of the suspected killers of a 74-year-old Igbo woman, Bridget Agbahime, over alleged blasphemy in Kano.
Okoh made the demand in Abuja when he fielded questions from newsmen in Abuja on Monday during the sixth edition of the Divine Commonwealth Conference (DIVCCON).
He said that the explanation becomes necessary in order not to give a negative signal that people can commit crimes and go scot-free.
“Government should make efforts to explain what happened and not give the impression that people can take laws into their hands and be set free. That is not good a signal. The Kano State government should say whether they tried those people and have been found guiltless or the wrong people were arrested and are being released for lack of evidence,” Okoh said.
Speaking on the theme of this year’s DIVCCON, “Fear Not”, the Anglican Primate said some of the actions of Federal Government are fuelling fears in the country and called on Christians to have faith in God as the medicine to conquer fear.
He said: “There is fear in the land, fear is a very bad thing and it appears as if the government is not taking adequate knowledge of what these fears are. The actions and activities of government or lack of actions in certain period are generating fears in the hearts of the people and when there is fear people act irrationally because they don’t have sufficient explanation.”
The Primate identified some of the fears currently holding sway in the country to include fear of Islamisation, fear of herdsmen menace, fear of grazing reserve, fear of Boko Haram, fear of economic recession, fear of unemployment and fear of Niger-Delta militancy.
He, however, called on Nigerians to overcome fears to avoid living in bondage saying, “some fears are unfounded or non-existent, yet they can hold the faithless in bondage as long as ignorance thrives.”
