4 soldiers, 2 policemen, others arrested for sexual abuse of IDPs

The Inspector-Gen­eral of Police (IGP), Monitoring Team has arrested some suspects in connection with the al­leged sexual harassment of Internally- Displaced Per­sons (IDPs) in Borno State.
The suspects include Police Officers, Army, Air Force, civilian JTF, Prison Warder and employees of the Ministry of Agricul­ture, Maiduguri.
Two police officers are currently in detention in connection with the crime and will soon be charged to court.

The Police boss, Ibra­him Idris, disclosed this at a meeting with top police officers in Abuja, yesterday.
It would be recalled that a few weeks ago, the Hu­man Rights Watch pub­lished a report indicting Police Officers and oth­er security agencies of al­leged sexual harassment of female IDPs in Borno State.
According to the IGP, “I guess you are aware that three weeks ago, I consti­tuted a panel to investigate the allegation by the Hu­man Right Watch.
“The investigation was conducted by the IGP’s Monitoring Team; they made contacts with the Human Rights Watch in order for them to verify some of these allegations but the Human Rights Watch said that they don’t reveal the sources of their information.
“Despite that, our offic­ers, with much of tenacity and professionalism, were able to verify some of the allegations and have arrest­ed some suspects.
“Some of these suspects are police; some from oth­er security agencies, civil­ians.
“As I am talking to you, we have two police offic­ers under investigation and they are in detention. We have a Prison Warder, two civilian JTF, a civilian from the Ministry of Agri­culture, Maiduguri who is now in our detention.
“In respect of our sister agencies, we have written to them to avail us their affected personnel. We are expecting three from the Army, one from Air Force.”
