Corruption: Senate Urges EFCC to go after CBN, MDAs

The Senate on Monday alleged mass looting and stealing of public funds by both serving and past officials and ordered the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to beam its searchlight on the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Ministries, Depart-ments and Agencies (MDAs) to pros-ecute the offenders.
This was even as it lambasted the anti-graft agency for abuse of service –wide votes in funding its operations during the 2016 fiscal year.

The senate’s directives to the Commission was made by its Committee on Anti-Corruption and Financial Crimes during the appear-ance of the EFCC Acting Chairman, Ibrahim Magu and other top officials before it for 2017 budget defence session.
The Committee specifically urged the EFCC to go after serving Directors, Permanent Secretaries, procurement officials and others within the Minis-tries, Departments and Agencies of government noted for all antics of looting along with those who had re-tired, just to bring them to book.
It said the monumental stealing of government monies by officials has been partly responsible to the current recession bedevilling the country.
Senator Isa Misau (APC Bauchi Cen-tral) who was the first to sensitise the EFCC against looting by government officials, expressed surprise on how a former NNPC Group Managing Direc-tor, Mr Andrew Yakubu, could own up to stock-piling some foreign curren-cies; $9.7 million, £74, 000 and some huge amount of Naira in a private residence.
