Officials Indicted for Electoral Malpractices Should Quit - Wike

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has advised police officers and their superiors who were in­dicted by the Independent National Electoral Com­mission (INEC) for electoral malpractices during the December 10, 2016 rerun elections to resign.
The governor, who commented on the INEC report, which found secu­rity agents, especially po­licemen of spearheading the rigging and violence that characterised the election of wrong doing, said in sane societies, the Police high command and the officers fingered in the acts should have honour­ably resigned from their positions.

Since they have re­mained in office, Wike, therefore, cautioned the Police and other security agencies not to repeat the same ignoble acts during the conclusion of rerun elections in Etche/Omu­ma Federal Constituency tomorrow.
In a statement issued on Wednesday in Port Harcourt, the state capi­tal by his Special Assis­tant on Electronic Media, Mr Simeon Nwakaudu, Wike appealed to INEC to desist from actions that would negatively affect the smooth conduct of the Saturday election.
Governor Wike, ac­cording to Nwakauda, spoke on Wednesday at Okehi in Etche Local Gov­ernment Area during the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) campaign for Etche/Omuma Federal Constitu­ency.
He said that the election presents INEC and Police the opportunity to redeem their image.
On the INEC panel re­port, which was published by a section of the media on Wednesday, Wike said: “If we are in a civilised country with the right leadership, these persons mentioned in the report would have resigned from their positions.
“They should bury their heads in shame. They are plotting how to kill us but God is exposing them. It is only God that has the final say”, he stated.
The governor said de­spite the machinations by the All Progressives Con­gress (APC) leaders backed by the police, the voice of the people of Etche must be heard.
He, therefore, called on the electorates in the con­stituency to defend their votes tomorrow.
“The money that is keeping Nigeria afloat is from Rivers State. There­fore, Nigeria must listen to Rivers State. The voic­es of our people must be heard”, he said.
The PDP candidate in the said rerun is Mr Je­rome Eke.
