Forty-three passengers and crew members on board an ill-fated commercial plane that crashed in South Sudan miraculously survived, the Cable News Network (CNN) is reporting.
The report said the flight was headed from Juba to Wau when it crashed as a result of poor weather at an airport in South Sudan.
Ateny Wek Ateny, the South Sudanese presidential spokesperson, was quoted as saying: “It is miraculous, completely. There are only minor injuries. There was no single death.”
The incident took place at the airport in Wau, in the nation's northwest.
Ateny said the pilot overshot the runway, dropping onto an unpaved ground.
The plane's right wing hit a car and a fire started on the right side of the plane, Ateny said. The pilot opened the door near the tail, which was not on fire.
"The crew managed to evacuate everyone," Ateny said.
It was learnt that the country’s authorities were not able to find all the passengers initially as they all fled the scene.
CNN further quoted Wal Achieng, an official at South Supreme Airlines in Wau, as saying the plane carried 40 adults and three children and that twenty-five of them were taken to hospitals.
At the time of this report, three passengers were still in a hospital with minor injuries.
According to Achieng, the fire that engulfed the plane initially made people think there were no survivors.
