Sequel to Tuesday resolution of the Senate to send delegation to South African Parliament, the Upper House yesterday set up a seven-man delegation led by the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu to embark on the trip.
The Deputy Senate President is to visit South African Parliament to seek permanent solution to xenophobic attacks against Nigerians.
Other members of the delegation are Senate Leader, Senator Ahmad Lawan; Senate Chief Whip, Senators Olusola Adeyeye; Senator Shehu Sani, Senator Shaaba Lafiaji; Senator Magnus Abe and Senator Stella Oduah.
The President of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki, who announced the list of the delegation, said that it was in consonance with the earlier resolution by the Senate to send a parliamentary team to South Africa parliament to address the problem of xenophobia in that country.
The Senate had on Tuesday resolved to send a parliamentary delegation, to visit the South African parliament, with a view to holding a dialogue with their South African counterparts on how to sustainably tackle the reoccurring menace.
The Senate also condemned in strong terms the resurgence of xenophobic attacks and extra-judicial killing of Nigerians by the South African Police and South Africans.
These resolutions were made by the upper chamber, following a motion sponsored by Senator Rose Oko and four other Senators, urging the chamber to urgently intervene in the situation to salvage Nigerians in South Africa from further agonies.
In her submissions, Oko accused the Police and other security operatives in South Africa of violating provisions of both their country’s laws and international laws on human rights.
