Nigerians Still Don't Understand NASS' Roles - Speaker Dogara

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Yakubu Dogara, has said that most Nigerian voters always put pressure on the legislators with demands clearly outside the functions of the National Assem­bly (NASS) because they are yet to understand the workings of the parliament.

He made the assertion in Kabba, Kogi State at the commis­sioning of projects and presenta­tion of empowerment materials provided by Hon Yusuf Tajudeen, who represents Kabba-Bunu/Iju­mu Federal Constituency in the National Assembly.
Dogara, however, stated that as a parliament, the National As­sembly is committed to making laws to improve on the well-being of Nigerians.
The Speaker noted that they will ensure meaningful growth and development as well as pro­moting peace, unity, fairness, eq­uity and justice in the country.
He stressed that the main re­sponsibilities of a legislator are law making, oversight and rep­resentation, adding that it does appear that many Nigerians are still not abreast with the consti­tutional duties of the parliament.
“Despite the misinterpreta­tion of the roles of legislature by Nigerians and realising the pre­ponderance of economic and infrastructural deficit across the country, the 8th Assembly of the National Assembly resolved to intervene where and when neces­sary”, he assured.
Dogara pointed out that it was in realisation of this call to nation­al service that many legislators through the Zonal Intervention Initiative provide incentives and projects to drive economic activi­ties in their constituencies.
He commended Hon Tajudeen in his resolute desire and passion to attract positive and landmark projects to Kabba-Bunu/Ijumu Federal Constituency and called on the people not to relent in giv­ing him the needed counsel and prayers.
In his address, Rep Tajudeen said, “For me, my passion is non-negotiable. I am not apologetic about it. At all times, I strive to explore opportunities and open­ings that will impact positively on my people.”
