Police officers who chained two suspects to a moving van in Benin City, Edo State, will be prosecuted, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police for Zone 5, Mr Adamu Abubakar, has said.
In a statement signed by the Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Emeka Iheanacho, the AIG said an investigation had been launched into the alleged assault by the Zonal Criminal Investigation and Intelligent Department.
Adamu described the conduct of the policemen as unprofessional saying they would be sanctioned as soon as the investigation is concluded. He added that the act doesn’t depict the ethics and core values of the police as it violates the principle of democratic policing.
He, however, assured members of the public that appropriate punishment will be meted out on the culprits, noting that the victims one Odozi Kester and Austin Ogbomwan are in good health and helping the police in the investigation.
“We urge members of the public to continue to support the Nigeria Police force in its onerous task of providing a sustainable peace and security in our dear country,” he said.
