Twitter user @KingDouyeAlfred gives deep insight into the root of our Ineptitude, Tribalism & Nepotism?
He buttressed his point in a series of tweets as follows
We complain about tribalism & nepotism in govt everyday but will never ask why it's there
You cannot solve a problem you can't identify
There is a logical reason why tribe/ethnicity/creed are criteria for appointments, benefit etc ahead of merit in Nigeria
It is by design
You see, believe it or not, tribalism is economic behaviour - and it responds to market forces like any commodity & it's in demand
Tribalism is in demand for 2 reasons
A: Brotherly love
B: Nigeria's structure
To illustrate this, I did 2 polls with ordinary Nigerians
5-Poll A is a unitary system with statutory allocations monthly for governors to spend - like Nigeria
Voters are the governor
See results?
1st Pole
Because it was solely to share benefit, majority(rightly) turned to their loved ones first - this is normal & even noble
It's why we toil
7-Our leaders, governors, president are not doing anything surprising or out of the ordinary when they are nepotistic
Your votes prove that
Poll B is a federal system with no allocation where the governor needs skill for production before he can give his people
See results?
2nd Pole
The governor (voters) in poll B, though they love their kin the same, shunned them to employ the best hands who merit the job
See?
Its simple, production demands factors of production & skill is one of em- creating demand for merit
Sharing creates demand for nepotism
Put simply, our unitary system is creating no demand for merit as there is no need to produce before earning revenues
But nepotism? Yes
When earning is decoupled from productivity, people will rightly revert to primal sentiments of responsibility to take care of home first
If a Bauchi state governor knows he needs to produce lots of rice to earn & a Yoruba man is best farmer, he'll employ him
Merit
If the same governor's only job is to wait 30 days for allocation to share (even in the form of jobs)? - Bauchi citizens first
Nepotism
We have created a system that incentivises, encourages & rewards all the things we claim to hate
Our dysfunction is by design
You cannot solve a problem you cannot identify
Nepotism in governance is not a moral issue- It's an economic one
We need to stop moralistic approach to institutional issues
It's the system - always was
We know what to do
As you were
