The minister of information and culture, Lai Mohammed, has explained why President Muhammadu Buhari preferred to travel to the United Kingdom to seek medical attention, while ignoring Nigerian hospitals.

The Punch reports that Lai Mohammed gave the explanation during a live radio programme titled, ‘Morning Crossfire’, on Nigeria Info Abuja 95.1FM, on Thursday, June 1.

During the programme, an angry caller had criticised the All Progressives Congress-led (APC) administration for relenting on its promise to stop public officials from travelling abroad for medical treatment at the expense of taxpayers.

In his reaction, however, Mohammed said the president sought medical attention abroad because he needed the best medical care.

“My answer is very simple. Mr President is our father, he is the leader of the nation and I think he deserves the best in terms of medical treatment," the minister said.

On the show, the Mohammed also noted that the federal government was not flouting court orders regarding the release of some detained politically exposed persons.

When asked by a caller why some persons where being detained by the government when the courts had ordered their release, he said: “If it is a court order and the order is not appealed, then you have flouted the order.

“But if the order is appealed, then it is not a final order. Also, you have to balance national security with the rule of law. In the case of Ifeanyi Ubah, I think it is neither here nor there.”

Meanwhile, Nigerians have been assured by the federal government that President Muhammadu Buhari is in competent hands in London, United Kingdom.

Daily Trust reports that this assurance was given by the Lai Mohammed at the end of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting which held on Wednesday, May 31, at the State House in Abuja.

The meeting was chaired by Acting President Yemi Osinbajo.

Mohammed gave the assurance in response to questions from newsmen over the status of the presidents’ health.
