FRSC Officers Shot By Police Due For Surgery

Two Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, officers earlier shot by the police along Umuikaa/Aba Port Harcourt expressway are due for surgery at an undisclosed hospital in Abia State.

This is even as Speaker of Abia State House of Assembly, Chikwendu Kalu, yesterday, denied ordering the shooting of the FRSC officers.

The FRSC Corps Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem, who disclosed this to Vanguard, yesterday, said the officers were in stable condition and would be undergoing surgery to extract the bullets from their bodies.
Mr. Kazeem noted that the corps is waiting for the outcome of the detailed investigation by the police to know exactly what caused the ugly situation, adding that it was hopeful that the police will do a good job in finding out why the officers were shot. “We can’t take the law into our hands.

The matter has been reported to the police and the Commissioner of Police in Abia State is on top of the matter,” he stated, adding that the corps has confidence in the police to handle the matter.

Meanwhile, the Speaker of Abia State House of Assembly, Mr. Chikwendu Kalu, said he did not order his security aides to shoot two officers of the FRSC. Giving account of what he knew about the incident, the Speaker told journalists, yesterday, in Umuahia that he never ordered his security personnel to shoot the FRSC officers as he was not there when the incident happened.
Kalu said by his wife’s account of the incident, she was travelling to Aba with her chief detail and a friend when they were “accosted aggressively” by FRSC officers on duty at the Arungwa Junction of the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway. According to him, after his wife’s car was stopped, the FRSC officer allegedly hit the car repeatedly with a stick and ordered the occupants out of the car; then dragged her chief detail out of the car and in the process allegedly manhandled her. He said further that his wife told him that she was roughly pushed down when she attempted to intervene which made her to sustain injuries all over her body.

The Speaker explained that he was at his official lodge in Umuahia receiving a visitor when he received a “distress call” over the incident and he sent his own chief detail to go and find out what happened.
He said whatever transpired at the scene of the incident was beyond his knowledge since he was not there and expressed surprise to read in a newspaper that he ordered his security detail to shoot the FRSC officers. Contacted, the State Police Commissioner, Leye Oyedade, confirmed the incident, saying the police are handling the matter and would resolve it amicably.
