2019: Agbo Warns Nigerians Against Obasanjos Third Force, Canvases Capacity Building for Existing Political Parties

The Deputy National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Engr Emmanuel Agbo has called on Nigerians to reject the proposition for a third force by former President Olusegun Obasanjo in his letter to President Muhammadu Buhari, saying it is detrimental to the political stability of the nation.

Agbo, in a statement released on Thursday, stipulated that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) remains a colossal failure and worse than how the letter described the Buhari administration. He said the call for a third force while the leading opposition party PDP boasts of credibly qualified people with undisputable credentials in good governance amounts to insincerity of the highest order to the political stability of Nigeria as this will result to developing individual capacities as opposed to developing institutional capacities.

He said, "With great respect to Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, I will not subject his letter to President Muhammadu Buhari to the merits or otherwise of it as it has been variously canvassed by eminently very qualified Nigerians. But one very critical issue worthy of genuine reflection is the proposition for the third force syndrome.

"Canvassing for a third political platform for 2019 is not only insincerity of the highest order to the political stability of the nation but in my view a call for cyclically recirculating in an unending manner our political developmental experimentation. This is akin to throwing away the baby with the bath water.

"In advance climes what statesmen advocate and foster on their political environment is deepening the development of the institutions in the polity. The call for third force seeks developing individual capacities as opposed to institutional development.

"Just like the APC found themselves with over 65% of the leadership coming from the PDP, the formation of another political platform will only  be an assemblage of the PDP and APC leaving these institutions to suffer while the new platform is used to develop individuals coagulated from a policy that deliberately killed previously existing political parties."

Agbo who was the former Chairman of the Forum of States Chairmen of PDP emphasize the need to build existing political institutions, thereby furnishing them with capacities to check the excesses of the members and leadership alike.

"Our main concern as a nation now should be to consciously develop existing political institutions with the requisite capacities to check the excesses of  her membership and even leadership. Capacity building of the existing political Parties as verile political institutions remain the only solution to the failures attendant to democratically elected governments," Agbo concluded.
