Rescue Missing Yobe Girls: Senate Urges FG To Intensify Efforts

The Senate has asked the Federal Government to intensify efforts to ensure the safe return of all the schoolgirls abducted by insurgents in Yobe.

This followed the adoption of a point of order raised by Senator Bukar Ibrahim during plenary.

Senator Ibrahim, while commending security agencies over the safe return of some of the abducted schoolgirls, urged them to do more to ensure the return of the remaining missing girls.

The Senate Leader, Senator Ahmed Lawan commended both the Federal and Yobe governments for taking immediate actions toward rescuing the girls but called on the government to be proactive in protecting schools nationwide.

While the state government says some of the 50 missing girls have been rescued by security operatives, the lawmaker insisted that 46 students were still missing.

Over 50 schoolgirls are missing from the Government Girls Science Technical College (GGSTC) located in Dapchi, Headquarters of Bursari Local Government area of the state.

The girls went missing after gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram terrorists invaded the school days ago.

Governor Ibrahim Gaidam in a statement made available to Channels Television on Wednesday, February 21 said since the day of invasion by the terrorists over 50 schoolgirls are still missing.

“Out of the 926 students in the school, over 50 are still unaccounted for as of the time of this statement.

“As the public is aware, the students were helped by their teachers to escape through the night to the surrounding bush and villages as the terrorists stormed the town last Monday,” Gaidam said.

On Wednesday,  the President, Muhammadu Buhari, directed the military to take over the situation  at the Government Girls Technical College (GGSTC) in Dapchi.

He also directed a delegation which will be led by the Minister of Defence to Dapchi to ascertain the situation. The delegation is to depart Thursday to Dapchi.
