Justice Ngwuta Resumes Duty After 3 Years Of Technical Suspension

Justice Sylvester Ngwuta, whose house and that of other Supreme Court Justices were raided by the operatives of the Department of State Service in August 2016, has resumed his duties after three years of ‘technical suspension’.

Speculation of his resumption came after being spotted at the special court session marking the commencement of the new 2019/2020 legal year of the apex court. He sat on the bench as the third most senior judge, behind the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Tanko Muhammad and Justice Bode Rhodes-Vivour at the event in which 38 lawyers will be sworn in as Senior Advocates of Nigeria.

Punch reported that Justice Mary Peter-Odili sat next to Justice Ngwuta who was asked to step down from the bench pending the conclusion of the criminal trial against him in 2016.

The recalled Justice who has not been part of any sitting or ceremony of the court from 2016 until Monday September 23, was charged with money laundering before the Federal High Court in Abuja and with assets declaration breaches before the Code of Conduct Tribunal. The cases were however dismissed by the court which prohibited the trial of a serving judge without being first disciplined by the National Judicial Council.
