The president was evacuated from the briefing room just minutes into his press conference .
Journalists in the briefing room reported seeing an agent lock the doors from the exterior after the president was escorted out.
The president upon returning to the press conference told journalists that the suspect was shot by law enforcement and rushed to hospital, but he did not specify if the suspect was a male or female. Trump said he was escorted to the Oval Office by the agent who locked the briefing room.
"I would like to thank the Secret Service for doing their always quick and very effective work."
"The world has always been a dangerous place. Not something that is unique.
"You look back over the centuries, the world has been a dangerous place, very dangerous place, and it will continue, I guess, for a period of time."
As he finished the press conference, he told reporters: "I'm sorry for the disturbance before, things happen."
