A 70-year old pastor, Mr Caleb Oluwafisi has approached the Ojo Customary court to dissolve his 41- year old marriage. He is contending that his wife, Titilayo Oluwafisibe has refused to sleep with him for the past 10 years.
According to him, as a pastor, he cannot have any sexual intercourse with anyone else except his wife and since the wife has refused to make love to him, he had been living without sex for 10 years now.
Mr Oluwafisibe told the court that the wife uses sex as a punishment because she feels “I am not taking care of her well. My wife knows that things are really tough for me now and because of that, she punishes me by refusing to have sex with me. But when I had money, she was always happy.
“Since I married my wife in June 1975, it’s been marriage and separation in two phases because every situation was determined by what I could offer.
“We were living well until 1998 when things became very tough for me. We separated from 1998-2006 when my church transferred me out to the East.”
Mr Oluwafisibe also said that the wife also “influenced our children negatively. We always have different opinions on how to train our kids and she stands firm on her opinion and has succeeded in getting the children on her side. They do not respect my opinion and we clash because of them.”
The petitioner also said that the issue between him and his wife became so much that he had to set out time to pray for his wife to have a change of attitude towards him.
He said, “I even had a special prayer for my wife for three years to see if God would intervene in the difficult situation and change her personality.
“I want the court to separate this union so I can move on and enjoy the rest of my life in peace.”
However, the wife, Titilayo denied all her husband’s allegations. She complained bitterly that her husband does not have compassion for her and doesn’t treat her with love or kindness.
“He calls himself a pastor, yet he doesn’t have regard for his family. He has really caused so much division among our children,” she said.
The president of the court, Veronica Willoughby asked the petitioner, Mr Caleb Oluwafisibe to re-evaluate his decision to dissolve the marriage and think of a more peaceful and amicable way to settle differences instead of seeking dissolution. “As a pastor, you should seek peace and not dissolution. I will give you a second chance to go back and reconsider your intention. You both have failed in the training of your children by using them as a point of disagreement; your children are your collective responsibility,” she stated.
