The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media, Mallam Garba Shehu, has told Nigerians not to expect President Muhammadu Buhari to start running around shortly after his return from medical vacation in the United Kingdom.
Shehu made this known yesterday during an interview with the Arise Television, in which he also stated that the Presidency would not disclose the nature of Buhari’s illness.
President Buhari, to the relief of most Nigerians, returned back to the country last Friday after spending over 50 days to attend to an undisclosed ailment.
During his absence, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo held sway as Acting President.
Nigerians had expected that with his return, the reins of power would be returned to him and he would immediately commence actions to take the country out of recession.
In the interview, which was monitored by a correspondent in Abuja, Shehu averred that since Buhari’s ministers were the most powerful in the country’s history, needing little supervision, there was no need for the President to immediately begin to exert himself.
On whether the President would be going for another medical vacation, Shehu said that it was up to his doctors to say when next Buhari should travel for further medical checkup.
Meanwhile, President Buhari will today officially write the leaderships of the two chambers of the National Assembly to notify them of his return to the country from the United Kingdom.
He is also expected to resume his official duties, according to his Special Adviser on media, Mr. Femi Adesina who confirmed it through a twit on Friday. “PMB will Monday transmit letter to National Assembly on his return to the country. That makes his return to work formal, and constitutional,” he twitted.
