Group Describe Wike's Health Sector Reform as Nonpareil

Medical doctors and other health workers in Rivers State have praised Govenor Nyesom Wike’s transfor­mation of the health sector described in state.
They described Gover­nor Wike’s restructuring of the sector in his two years in office as unparalleled in re­cent times in the state.
The experts, under the aegis of National Association of Government General And Dental Medical Practitioners (NAGGMDP) in the state, particularly praised Gov. Wike for approving the im­plementation of the Revised Consolidated Medical Scale for doctors.

The group, which is an af­filiate of the Nigerian Medi­cal Association (NMA), also commended the governor for establishing the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital by signing the bill into law.

In a joint statement issued on Wednesday by the NMA and NAGGMDP, Rivers State chapters, and signed by the state NMA Chairman, Dr. Datonye Alasia, they expressed support for Wike’s administration in improving the health sector.
The NMA stated that its affiliate had never accused the governor of abandoning the health industry as reported in some quarters, adding that NAGGMDP was committed to promoting the health sector.
Alasia said: “We express our support for the lauda­ble health programmes of the administration as we look for­ward to the resolution of key issues related to our land and housing scheme.
“The NAGGMDP in Riv­ers State wishes to set the re­cords straight by stating that at no time did the associa­tion and its leadership claim that the health sector in the state has been abandoned by His Excellency, Chief Nyesom Ezenwo Wike.”
“The NAGGMDP in Riv­ers State is committed to promoting effective health­care delivery in the state and will support all laudable pro­grammes of the government in this regard. We are confident and believe that all outstand­ing issues will be resolved”.
He continued: “The Nige­rian Medical Association in Rivers State expresses appre­ciation and commends Gover­nor Wike for signing the Riv­ers State University Teaching Hospital Bill into Law.”
“This signing of the bill has given life to the Rivers State University Teaching Hospi­tal, a mission which the NMA Rivers State has promoted and advocated for due to the im­mense benefits it will bring in the training of medical stu­dents of the College of Med­icine, Rivers State Universi­ty and other health workers; training of specialist medical manpower and strengthening of the Residency Programme, provision of tertiary hospital services for Rivers State citi­zens, as well as the promotion of health research.”
The association said the establishment of the teaching hospital was the fulfilment of a promise made by the gover­nor who has shown a passion for improving healthcare de­livery in the state.
“The NMA Rivers State will do its best to support the government in ensuring that the hospital delivers quality services and attains the man­date for which it was set up. We look forward to the fulfil­ment of other promises made by His Excellency as we work together in promoting health­care delivery in the state,” Ala­sia said.
