NEF said that it had uncovered plots by some politicians to undermine the interest of the region, taking advantage of the absence of President Muhammadu Buhari who is in London on medical trip.
After its two-day meeting in Kano Government House, NEF declared its unreserved loyalty to the administration of President Buhari, insisting that the Forum had no regret for supporting the election of the President in 2015.
The Northern elders, who said that they would resist any attempt to hijack Buhari’s government by cabals under any guise, scored him high in tackling insurgency in the North East and securing the freedom of some abducted Chibok girls.
In a communique signed by NEF spokesman, Prof. Ango Abdullahi and the Deputy Leader, Chief Wantaregh Paul Unongo, the northern elders called on Osinbajo to be careful of mischievous elements who are plotting to overheat the polity by taking advantage of the absence of President Buhari to achieve dubious political goals.
The Forum warned those seeking undeserved political advantage to desist from such moves, adding that the North was conscious of its obligations and rights and would not hesitate to discharge and defend them without reservations.
Abdullahi said: “We (NEF) are aware that attempts are being made to exploit the absence of President Buhari to achieve dubious political goals; and we warn those seeking undeserved political advantages to desist.”
The northern elders further advised Osinbajo to “exercise responsibilities, as he did in the past, with commitment, sensitivity, and respect for the constitution. We urge him to ignore mischief which seeks to pitch him against the president or the Nigerian people whose mandates they both exercise.”
The communiqué noted that, “the task of governing the nation will continue uninterrupted until the return of President Buhari. We therefore appeal to all persons with responsibility to cooperate fully to sustain a united, focused and committed administration.
“While commending the sterling contributions of Senate President Abubakar Bukola Saraki and Speaker, House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara in providing the necessary leadership to stabilize the polity, we appeal to the executive and legislative arms of government to work together to pass the 2017 budget without further delay.”
