Senator Mao Onuabunwa, representing Abia North Senatorial Zone, has insisted that the stance of South East senators on the on-going constitutional review is “total restructuring”.
Ohuabunwa who stated this while addressing newsmen yesterday in Umuahia after inaugurating the council executives of his political structure “Follow Better Organisation”, said Nigeria’s current structure bequeathed by the military was faulty and out of tune with democracy.
He regretted that Northern senators voted against devolution of power and restructuring but said that senators from the South East would not accept anything less than total restructuring.
His words: “Nigeria can’t move forward without restructuring. What we have now is military structure which is at variance with democracy. Our stance is total restructuring.
“Restructuring is not disintegration; it is not secession. We need it for Nigeria to move forward”, the senator fumed.
Ohuabunwa said that the lopsidedness in Nigeria’s current political structure was responsible for the rising wave of agitations for self-determination by various ethnic nationalities in the country.
He said that unity should be based on equity and justice, arguing that the way to win back the confidence of Ndigbo in Nigeria is to at least grant the creation of addition state to bring the zone at par with others.
“If you want us to appease our people who have been agitating for Biafra, we should at least have the parity state in the constitution amendment instead of throwing away the entire proposal.”
The former Speaker ECOWAS Parliament, however, said consultations were still going on among senators to revisit some of the salient proposals that were earlier rejected with a view to passing them.
He explained that the major reason the restructuring proposal was shot down was because of misunderstanding by some senators about the essence and true meaning of restructuring.
Ohuabunwa expressed hope that with proper consultations and education, those who earlier opposed the move would see reason to support it in the overall interest of the country.
The senator had while inaugurating members of his political structure earlier, enjoined them to remain committed to the structure and work harder to expand it to the grass root ahead of the 2019 polls.
Ohuabunwa who said he had given a good account of himself so far as the senate identified the bill for the take-over of the Abia State College of Education (Technical) Arochukwu by the Federal Government which has passed second reading, as one of his landmark achievements.
The senator who said three of his bills including the bill on Agriculture Credit Scheme had already been signed into law assured his constituents of more federal projects in the zone.
